Jousting
What It's All About
Jousting is a medieval equestrian sport where two knights on horseback charge at each other at high speed, aiming to strike their opponent's shield or body with a blunted wooden lance to score points or unhorse them. Today it survives as a specialised full-contact and choreographed historical combat sport — and this year it thunders into the Main Ring as our headline attraction.
History and Origins
Emerging in the British Isles as early as the 11th century, the sport began as a training exercise for warfare before evolving into a popular competitive spectacle by the 15th century. Knights often wore heavy armour — sometimes exceeding 40kg — and charged down a central barrier known as a "tilt" at speeds of up to 30mph. Despite its romanticised reputation of winning a lady's honour, the sport was notoriously dangerous, occasionally even used as a political cover-up or subjected to papal bans.
